The 19-year-old woman from Iran who had shocked the internet with her appearance after undergoing 50 surgeries to look like Angelina Jolie has come clean – it was all a hoax.
Sahar Tabar, who had become a poster child for plastic surgery gone wrong, admitted that she had faked the photographs using a mixture of her makeup skills and computer wizardry. The teenager said it was a way to “amuse herself” and a “form of self-expression”.
It is not clear what made Sahar come clean, but the torrent of abuse directed her way on social media is likely to have played a part. She was called a “zombie” by many commenters and had to make her Instagram account private.
Unedited shots claim to show Sahar without her gaunt cheeks, puffy lips and contact lenses.
She told Russian news outlet Sputnik that looking like someone else is not her goal. She said her look, characterized by hollow cheeks, inflated and pouting lips, and bright blue eyes shouldn’t be taken at face value.
“Over time I post a photo, I make my face more fun and funny, it is a form of self-expression, a kind of art,” she said, adding that her real fans always knew what she really looked like.
Now, un-tampered images of hers have surfaced online that show her actual appearance are a far cry from the harrowing appearance she had projected. The images, posted on her second Instagram account, show that she looks startlingly normal.
Skeptics had pointed to the warped areas to prove the photos were photoshopped. (Photo: Instagram)
Even before she had admitted to the doctored images, eagle-eyed observers on social media had found reason for suspicion after noticing warped backgrounds and odd angles, suggesting that the photo was tweaked using Photoshop.
But most had fallen for the hoax, with many showing concern for her health.
