Elders are the heart of a nation. We as youngsters go through different phases in life. We deal with experiences of joy, pain, sadness, love, separation, struggle and a lot more. Eventually, we come to a phase where we start weakening. Our body loses its strength and slowly but steadily we grow old. We reach a point in life where we need the same kind of support that a child needs from his parents. This is the reality of life.
As youngsters, we fail to understand the situation and tend to be materialistic in our ways. Some consider the responsibility of parents as a burden, some deal with it without compassion and a few just leave them. As a youth, we should not only take care of elders but also give them the love and respect they deserve.
"It is the wisdom of our elders that guides us. All the elders should have a special place in all our hearts and given the care they need."
Reasons to respect and care for elders
The reasons to respect our elders cannot possibly be summarized in into an article. They deserve a lot more. But to give an idea here are some reasons to respect our elders.
Source of Wisdom
Our elders are a powerhouse of wisdom. They have seen life in a practical sense and have faced a number of problems on their way. Every person has a story and they have it too. It is a great experience to learn from their stories. They know the ruthlessness as well as the love in this world. By the time they have developed a value system which would help us in many situations of our life. We can always look up to them when we feel lost in life.
There is something that separates us from animals, our humanity. It is our love towards fellow humans which makes us special and that has helped us to sustain our lives since ages. In early civilizations, elders in village used to guide and protect the family. But with development, we have lost insight we used to get from them.
The reason why so many youngsters are feeling lost, dejected and depressed today is primarily because there is nobody to guide them. They have probably separated from their grandparents and sometimes are not very emotionally connected to their parents as well. Their guidance and advice is something we need to help us where we lack. It is humanity that we help each other to grow and survive. Let's bring those values back in action.
One day, Youth will be Old too
This is a fact. You cannot deny it. We learn what we see and if you want your children to care for you then start caring for your parents. You will be in the same place as they are. One day you will be weak, you will need support, you will have some dependencies, and if nobody cares for you, then how would you feel? Put yourself in shoes of your elders and you will probably start giving reasons to respect them yourself.
It is not that you don’t focus on yourself. But at least we all can spare 5 minutes in a day to talk to our elders. Trust me that what they crave for. They also need to have conversations at a personal level. They need love, care, and support just as we all do. Just start small and you will feel good. TRY IT !
