With his daughter Honeypreet arrested after evading police for over a month, self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim has suffered yet another massive blow. The High Court on Monday accepted an appeal seeking life-imprisonment for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh 'Insan'.
The appeal was filed by the two victims of the rape case. This comes after Ram Rahim challenged Panchkula Special CBI Court's verdict in the rape case against him in Punjab & Haryana. Earlier, the special CBI court had sentenced Ram Rahim to 20 years in prison after his conviction in a 2002 rape case. The controversial guru, who was found guilty of rape charges by the court, has been serving his jail term since then.
As per a PTI report, "The revision petition filed by rape victims for enhancing the sentence to life imprisonment for Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been admitted," said victims' counsel Navkiran Singh. On the other hand, the counsel for Dera sect chief S K Garg Narwana told PTI that, 'the court has also admitted our appeal (challenging the conviction).' The report further states that both the pleas will be heard together.
As per another PTI report, the special CBI court while sentencing him refused any leniency and gave him 20 years imprisonment term for raping two of his 'gullible and blind followers'. The court awarded 10 years of sentence each for the rape of two women by making it clear that both the punishments will run consequently against the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda. The special CBI court had also fined Ram Rahim Singh Rs 15 lakh in each rape case. Currently, Ram Rahim is locked in Sunaria jail in Rohtak district. Meanwhile, Ram Rahim's close confidant and alleged daughter, Honeypreet has been sent to six days police remand by a Panchkula court.
